Ligue 1 is the top professional association football league competition held every year in France. It is the top football competition of the country and serves as the benchmark for footballers from around the country. Similar to English premier league, La-Liga, Serie A, championship leagues, this league too has provision for participation of a total of 20 teams. But here they have done a further classification by dividing these 20 teams into 2 groups; League 1 & League 2. The transfer of participating teams between the 2 groups is done on the basis of point standings and the teams meeting the criteria are relegated or upgraded accordingly.
The Season for this league is from August till May, with the top 10 teams in League 1 playing 38 matches each or a total of 380 games in the entire season. Ligue 1 of France also enjoys a prominent place in popularity and viewer’s interest, and is presently ranked 5th in Europe behind EPL, La Liga, Serie A and the German Bundesliga. This league is also renowned as Ligue 1 Orange, as it is sponsored by the French telecommunications giant Orange.
After its inauguration in the year 1932, the league was known as National before it changed name to Division 1 only after just 1 year of its existence. The current name of the league was given in the year 2002. Some of the renowned teams currently playing in the league include Marseille, Lyon, Rennesa, Lorient, Bordeaux and Monaco. The current league title is held by Marseille, which is also their ninth title in the 2009 & 2010 season. Marseille is also the only French team ever to have won the Champions League title, which they won in the year 1993.
