Champions League

As the name suggests, UEFA Champions League is a yearly competition of the best soccer clubs in Europe. Clubs placed on top of the point’s standings in their respective leagues, including English Premier League, Spanish La-Liga, Italian Serie A League and Bundesliga compete against each other through round robin and qualifying stages to reach the semi-finals and the finals of the event to finally compete for UEFA Champions Cup.

In the beginning, this competition was run on a straightforward knockout basis, with participation open for only the champion clubs of each country. But later on in the late 90s, the competition format was changed, enabling more teams to compete in this prestigious tournament on a round-robin format. At present, the strongest leagues of Europe send 4 teams each to participate in UEFA Champions League. The club that wins this prestigious championship automatically qualifies to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup as well as the UEFA Super Cup.

In the entire history of the UEFA Champions League, the prestigious title has been bagged by 21 different clubs of Europe. Real Madrid of Spain has the distinction of winning this coveted title the most number of times (9 times in all). Statistically, clubs from Spanish La-Liga have had the most success in this competition, winning it for a record 12 times collectively. Italy and England too had their share of success with 11 title wins between 3 & 4 clubs respectively. FC Barcelona are the current title holders of the UEFA Champions League, which they won by beating Manchester United 2–0 in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League final.
